Investment casting is a cost-effective manufacturing process which produces reliable, consistent and intricate results.

But what is the process, and how does it work?

Read on as we break down everything you need to know about this method and its benefits.

What is investment casting?

Investment diecasting is also sometimes referred to as lost-wax casting, and is often used to create metal components in a range of industries. It’s an effective method that produces consistent results, especially small and detailed parts.

Therefore, it’s an excellent technique if you’re producing intricate pieces that require enormous precision, such as jewellery, complex automotive and industrial applications, or even medical tools.

What is the investment casting process?

The first important step of the investment casting process is to create a model of your desired shape, sometimes referred to as a “master die”, which a wax pattern can be created from.

This is then coated in a ceramic slurry to create a strong mould which is then reheated, allowing you to remove the molten wax with ease, leaving you with your ceramic shell.

Next, molten metal is poured into the ceramic mould cavity to cool and solidify. The product is then removed from the shell, leaving you with the final result.

What are the benefits of investment casting?

Quality

When using this method of casting, results tend to be accurate and have a smoother surface, making it an excellent way to produce high-quality components. This generally makes it more cost-effective as it has minimal risks of defects.

It also provides an outstanding level of intricacy and consistency, even being able to replicate the finest and smallest details.

Easy production

Additionally, manufacturing is quick with investment casting, allowing it to meet the demands of speedy and efficient production.

Investment casting also produces minimal waste due to the use of an accurate mould of the master die, resulting in fewer defects and remodels.

Therefore, investment casting tends to be a more environmentally friendly choice in comparison to other die casting processes, such as die or sand casting. Recycled metals can also be used to conserve energy further.

Versatility

Due to the manufacturing process, investment casting advantages also include versatility. It can be used to create a mould of any size or pattern, simple or complex with ease. Additionally, you can pour a variety of molten metals into the ceramic mould including nickel, steel, iron and copper.

This grants a huge amount of flexibility regarding design choices while remaining a cost-effective choice.
