What is aluminium?

Before we go any further, let’s start by exploring exactly what aluminium is.

Comprising 8% of the Earth’s core mass, aluminium is an abundant pale metal. Favoured for its low density, being non-toxic and easy to work with it.

Aluminium is one of the most extensively used metals in manufacturing. The qualities it’s most sought after for? Being lightweight and durable. On its own though, aluminium lacks the strength demanded for numerous applications – which is where alloys come in.

 

What is aluminium alloy die casting?

By definition, an alloy is a metal created by combining two – or sometimes more – metallic elements together. Aluminium alloy die casting is when we use aluminium combined with other metals to create your unique die casting parts.

The reason for perusing aluminium alloy die casting is to bring together the most desirable qualities of each element to create an ‘alloy’ that offers the exact qualities that are needed, such as enhanced strength or increased durability to corrosion.

Commonly used aluminium alloys for die casting

There are many alloys used in the Aluminium Alloy Die Casting process. Some of the most commonly used for aluminium die casting include:

  • A380 – largely acknowledged as one of – if not the – most common aluminium alloys. Favoured for its combination of desirable casting, mechanical and thermal properties.
  • A390 – this alloy is extremely hard and offers exceptional durability. The downside is that it lacks flexibility and is one of the least supple aluminium alloys.
  • A360 – offers exceptional pressure tightness and corrosion resistance, A360 has a high silicon content and has excellent fluidity when molten – highly coveted for efficient casting.
  • A413 – these alloys have excellent corrosion resistance and particularly high strength capabilities, meaning they are often a slightly more expensive aluminium die casting option – although worth every penny!
  • ADC-12 – also referred to as A383, this is an excellent choice, balancing value and performance. Containing higher silicon levels and less copper, it is easy to cast and machine.
