What is powder coating?
Put simply, powder coating is a dry finishing process and is a popular way of painting metal parts.
Applied as a dry powder, which is held in place by an electrostatic process, it is a reliable method that avoids the drips and wastage associated with regular paint.
An electrical charge fuses the powder (in a colour of your choice) to the surface of the part, which is then ‘baked’. The result is a hardwearing and attractive finish.

Need to protect your part from scratches, chipping, and corrosion? Then powder coating is a great option.
Creating a tougher finish than conventional paint, powder coating can produce a thick layer without running or sagging. Consistency in the finished look – whether parts are coated horizontally or vertically – is excellent.
The thermal bonding process that locks the powder coating into place enhances the durable qualities of each part, increasing weather resistance and minimising the impact of any harsh environmental factors.

Powder coating mimics the die casting process in that it too offers speed paired with efficiency.
There’s no time wasted waiting for paint to dry. Parts are sprayed and then immediately cured.
And with all paint applied in one application (thickness is carefully controlled so there’s no need for repeat coats), the process is dramatically sped up in comparison to traditional painting.

The powder coating sticks to the surface of metal parts without the need for solvents or harsh chemicals.
The amount of ozone-damaging VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), found in powder coating is also negligible in comparison to traditional paint.

Are there any disadvantages to powder coating?
The honest answer is, no, not really. Although it does depend on exactly what it is you want and need from your end part.
The process of powder coating can result in a slightly dimpled texture (think orange peel) but unless you require a perfectly smooth finish this is largely regarded as quite aesthetic.
